The UFC put together a great card for UFC on FOX 24 with great fighters all looking to step up and show that they belong at the top of the promotion but only some could come through with the right performance at the right time.
The UFC returned to Newark, New Jersey with plenty of important fights on the card as a number of fighters looked to move towards the title in their respective divisions.
The UFC takes the show to network television for the second time this year as a number of top contenders try to solidify their spots in the title hunt.
The MMA world is not an extremely large one as everyone seems to know everyone else and they all run the in the same circles. There are only a small number of promotions that see the top fighters and so two fighters from the same division are likely to run into each other at some point if they fight long enough. That was the case for Gegard Mousasi and Ronaldo Souza who met much earlier in their careers during the Dream 6: Middleweight Grand Prix in 2008.
The UFC is fresh off of an embarrassing weekend with their main event suffering a last-minute change. The UFC had never been in that situation before as only 24 hours before they were set to fight the main event between T.J. Dillashaw and Renan Barao saw a change with Barao being forced out. The UFC was sent scrambling and found a last-minute replacement who put up a good showing but never really had a shot.
2013 was a big year for the middleweight division in the UFC as the division ruled by the most dominant champion in UFC history would finally see a change. Anderson Silva would fall not once but twice to Chris Weidman meaning that the middleweight division would have a new champion for the first time since 2006. That would set the scene for the New Year as the division went from one of the most stable to one of the least stable in one fight
The UFC is full of great fighters and for many of them it is hard to find their way through the talent. It is an extremely tough thing to do in the promotion with the most talented fighters in the world. There are rarely any weak spots as every division is full of black belts, former champions, and even some Olympic medalists. Only a select few of these fighters will get their time to shine and even fewer will take full advantage of that chance.
The UFC would finish off one of their busiest times in the year as they would hold their third fight in 6 days. The UFC has been going quickly in the last month as they have pumped out fights keeping the UFC running and changing things rapidly. Whether it was the defeat of Anderson Silva, or the beginning of a new network, or even the crowing of a new lightweight champion the UFC has been busy.
The UFC is full of great stories with so many fighter on the roster and so many coming from different backgrounds. One dominating theme amongst all stories is the fighters who come in to the UFC with legends before they step into the octagon. These fighters move through the lower ranks with ease as they fight in their local circuits and end fights quickly.
Brazil has been the Mecca of MMA ever since Royce Gracie first stepped in to the octagon and immediately change the sport forever. Gracie would bring Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to the UFC and would shock the world when he beat fighter double his size. Before that the UFC was all about the power and the knockouts with some wrestling mixed in to the fights.
