The new Central Division is not the same as it once was with the top two teams taken away from the group. The Central Division had been built off of the rivalry between Detroit and Chicago but that is no longer there. The Chicago Blackhawks remain in the Central Division while the Detroit Red Wings move to the Eastern Conference.

The NHL season has been a very different league this year as the shortened season has not only affected the play on the ice but the attitudes in the offices. Teams are working with a very different timetable than they are used to meaning that they have to think a little outside the box. This can be seen in many moves made so far in the season and that includes the surprising amount of trades that have already happened this year.

As the NHL season quickly moves on the dangers of a short offseason and some freak accidents are beginning to take their toll. Injuries are piling up for teams in the NHL and that is never a good thing for any team. In this shortened season though, it becomes that much worse as there is no time to wait for players to recover.

The NHL is in a constant battle between the old and the new as tradition is constantly fighting the new guard. It is a league that constantly looks back to their history while still evolving as a sport. The NHL is one of the oldest organizations in North America with the Stanley Cup first handed out in 1893.
