The UFC has had an interesting year in 2014 as upsets have been the highlight of fights so far this year. No upset was bigger than when Renan Barao lost grip of his Bantamweight Title that everyone believed he would hold until he faced a returning Dominick Cruz. Cruz was the former champion that had yet to be beat in a title fight. A torn ACL and a number of setbacks have kept Cruz out of the octagon for almost three years.

In February Renan Barao would end his long march towards becoming the undisputed Bantamweight champion of the world. For two years he would sit at the top of the division with the interim Bantamweight title waiting for Dominick Cruz to get healthy. Setback after setback would plague the champion and Barao would continue to take out the top contenders in the division waiting for his shot at Cruz. Another setback in Cruz’s recovery would mean that yet another fight between the champion and the interim champion would be cancelled.

Urijah Faber was one of the very first faces of MMA when he was a part of the WEC and began his sponsorship deal with Amp Energy Drink. For many he would be the first exposure to the sport as he was the guy in the WEC and was the guy when MMA began to take hold of more fans. He would get to this level in large part because he was one of the best lighter weight fighters in the world and would prove it as the WEC Featherweight Champion in 2006.

It has been a long time since the Bantamweight Division has had a true title fight as one of the strangest stories in the UFC has played out in the division. Dominick Cruz was on his way to becoming one of the most dominant champions in the UFC. In 2011 Cruz would face Urijah Faber in the first ever Bantamweight championship fight for the UFC. It would be the start of the WEC merger into the UFC and two great WEC fighters would get the chance to earn a UFC title.
