UFC Fight Night 58 Preview

The UFC travels to Brazil to close out their 2014 season and in the middle of a big few months of the UFC schedule. This card will not feature some of the big names that are coming up in the schedule but it will be a night of legends against up and comers. It is the constant story in the UFC as top names continue to take on the new rising stars in hopes to extend their time and to remain among the best fighters in the UFC.

The UFC has had an interesting year in 2014 as upsets have been the highlight of fights so far this year. No upset was bigger than when Renan Barao lost grip of his Bantamweight Title that everyone believed he would hold until he faced a returning Dominick Cruz. Cruz was the former champion that had yet to be beat in a title fight. A torn ACL and a number of setbacks have kept Cruz out of the octagon for almost three years.

In February Renan Barao would end his long march towards becoming the undisputed Bantamweight champion of the world. For two years he would sit at the top of the division with the interim Bantamweight title waiting for Dominick Cruz to get healthy. Another setback in Cruz’s recovery would mean that yet another fight between the champion and the interim champion would be cancelled.

It has been a long time since the Bantamweight Division has had a true title fight as one of the strangest stories in the UFC has played out in the division. Dominick Cruz was on his way to becoming one of the most dominant champions in the UFC. In 2011 Cruz would face Urijah Faber in the first ever Bantamweight championship fight for the UFC. It would be the start of the WEC merger into the UFC and two great WEC fighters would get the chance to earn a UFC title.
