The CanWest conference is one of the two conferences that saw a major change in 2014 as the dominant school was no longer the Hardy Cup champion.

College Football in the states is constantly in the news with lawsuits and the constant debate over the bowl system. In Canada it is quite different as the system is what many wish the NCAA was. The playoff system in the CIS is a great one but it does not prevent one team from dominating most years.

The theme of the season id the dominance of the top four teams in the country and one of the best for almost half a decade has been the Calgary Dinos. The Dinos have won 4 Hardy Cups in the last four years as one of the most dominant teams in the CIS. They have done some great things and have shown how to sustain their success. They are one of the few true dynasties in the CIS with a four year run that will come under fire this year. Now they are hoping to get back to the top and unseat the recent dynasty. As is with most college teams a class can only last 4 years and that is where the Dinos are.

I have said many times before that winning consistently in college football is the hardest thing to do because of how teams are made. In college football teams are only together for a limited time as they come in to the school and then graduate. In the CIS there are only a maximum of 5 years for every player to play on any team as after that they no longer have eligibility.

CIS Football was officially in playoff mode this week as every conference held the semi-finals of their conference. It is the best time of year as the best teams face off with everything on the line. If they lose they go home with nothing but a playoff spot to boast about but if they win they live to fight another day in the CIS season. The regular season doesn’t matter in the playoffs besides the deciding what field you play on.

It’s that time of year again in the CIS as the season begins to wind down and look to the playoffs with only four games left for most teams. As the season looks to the end every conference is beginning to see more clear who will be making the playoffs. It is past the halfway point of the season and so it is time to look back and look forward towards the playoffs and the Vanier Cup.
