In the world of sports, forgiveness is a funny thing as athletes can easily get second or third chances as long as they are good enough to earn those chances.

The Year in Sports was a difficult one to figure out as the accomplishments of so many were often overshadowed by terrible actions of the few. It was a year where the Olympics provided great stories day in and day out and yet many to a backseat to other stories. Heroes rose in 2014 but they were not the stories that took precedence in 2014. Instead it was the fall of heroes that took most of the headlines this past year. It is a common occurrence in the world of sports especially with the evolution of the sports world.

So it begins, the biggest question heading into the NFL season has been answered and has had much of the expected result. Going into 2014 it was all about Johnny Manziel and when he would get to start for the woeful Browns. Many believed it wouldn’t be until around this time in the season when the Browns were out of the playoff hunt and ready to see what they had in the young exciting star. That was not exactly the case in Week 13 though as the Browns are far from the worst team in the league and still have a chance.

The NFL is not having a good start to their new season as the issues continue to come up and jobs continue to come into question. The indefinite suspension of Ray Rice for Domestic abuse, the multiple drug suspensions, and the issues of Adrian Peterson. It has been one of the worst two weeks for the NFL ever as they continue to deal with off-field issues while trying to put the concentration on the game on the field. They still have to deal with the issues off of the field though as the NFL has been forced to make changes on the fly for problems they never expected to happen.

The NFL season began this past weekend but it was not the start they were hoping for in a new season. In a week that was supposed to put all of the offseason issues behind as people began to focus on football again turned into a nightmare for the league. Football was the focus for the majority of the week with games coming back and teams looking to put up a good showing as they opened their season. With Monday Night Football set to close out the week everything came apart and the issues of the offseason came back in full force.

It wasn’t so long ago that the AFC North was one of the most dominant divisions in the NFL and one of the most difficult to break through. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens ruled the North winning 9 of 11 division titles since the creation of the AFC North division in 2002. There was rarely a year where Pittsburgh or Baltimore were not favourites to make the playoffs and many times they were favourites to win the Super Bowl, and made good on that prediction.

The AFC North is on the same type of path as the NFC West except they are a step ahead as they are the toughest division in football. Most good divisions have two good teams while the other two struggle. This continues on year after year as teams fall and team rise there always seem to be two good and two bad teams. That is not true in the AFC North as they have gone from a typical division to the toughest. There are not only two teams that can win this division but instead there are three teams with another on their way up.

The year is one month closer to turning the calendar into 2013 and for the NFL that means the always intimidating month of December. December is the last full month of the season and for some teams it can mean the beginning of the end for their season. It is a month where teams need to put up or shut up as it marks the beginning of the playoff race.

The beginning of this NFL is far behind us and with the playoffs creeping up fast the trends have changed. At the beginning of the year it seemed the NFC North was unstoppable with Green Bay playing great, Chicago being their usual surprise contenders, and Detroit being the biggest surprise of the year with a great undefeated start to the season.
