The Pacific Division will certainly be a division with a lot of eyes on it as the California teams still fight it out and try to get back to the top while the Alberta teams look for a resurgence and the newest team tries to make an impression.

The new alignment for the NHL was big for teams like the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets as they were able to move to their respectful places in the Eastern Conference. It would be the main story for the majority of the preseason when realignment was brought up. These teams would finally get a move to a place where they belonged rather than staying in the west and having another bad travel schedule.

The NHL continues to grow and despite many teams in the south struggling to get by there is one area that is not following suit with other non-traditional markets. The west coast of the USA, or more accurately California, was never a hockey market when the Los Angeles Kings entered the NHL in 1967. It was one of the first major expansions in the NHL and they would look to the West Coast to add two teams.

Often considered the forgotten conference the Pacific division is home to some of the best teams in the league along with struggling franchises. It is the division that many look to as a perfect example of teams that don’t belong in the league. Yet at the same time it is proof that the NHL is one of the best leagues in the world with so many possibilities.

The Pacific Division was the most successful division last year as they sent four of the five teams in the division to the playoffs. Unfortunately for the Dallas Stars they were the odd one out missing the playoffs. Meanwhile half of the playoff teams in the Western Conference were represented by the Pacific and that meant they had a good chance at making it far.
