Although the best pound-for-pound fighters don’t get to face each other UFC 197 will provide the opportunity to compare the top two in back-to-back fights.

The UFC found its way to Brazil once again this year as they continued a busy weekend with two fights from around the world. A day after the UFC went to Australia they appeared again this time from Brazil. It was a strange card in their second day of fights though as injuries ravaged through the entire roster of fighters. Originally the main event was to be Mauricio Rua against Jimi Manuwa in a matchup of two hard-hitting light heavyweights.

The UFC travels to Brazil once again this weekend and once again they will not see the fight they had planned. Originally the return to Brazil was to feature a Brazilian legend and a rising British star. Then with little over a week to go before the fight Jimi Manuwa broke his foot while training and was forced to withdraw from the fight. It was a big loss for the UFC and for Manuwa who had a chance to add a big name to his record.

The UFC fighter rankings have only been around for a few years but already they have taken over the conversation in the UFC. They represent a solid expectation of where a fighter stands in his or her division. It is a ranking to see who the top 15 fighters in each division are and when fighters look at their next opponent they can see where that fighter ranks and if they can move up with a win. When an unranked fighter gets someone in the top 10 it is a major opportunity for them to move up and achieve the ultimate goal of every fight, a title.

The UFC returns after an unexpected hiatus when UFC 172 was cancelled due to injuries to the main card. The off time was not expected but it did provide a little time in between fights after a rabid pace set by the promotion. For the last few months the UFC has been holding four events throughout one month and for some it has become a bit too much and has cause fatigue along with the depletion of the talent pool while fighters continue to get injured.
