When the NHL re-organized they made a big change to the playoff format that was meant to grow the game but instead it has forced some matchups to happen earlier than expected.

The NHL Playoffs are a different season and in that different season a new style of hockey is played leaving some of the top players in the game trying to figure out how to adjust to help their teams to the ultimate goal.

The NHL Playoffs were not the focus for at least one day this week as the NHL Draft Lottery took the headlines with one team getting a chance to change their franchise for the foreseeable future.

The focus in the NHL is centred around the playoffs and rightfully so as teams battle it out to get that much closer to the Stanley Cup.

The NHL playoff are officially underway as the march towards the Stanley Cup began this week with 16 teams looking to put their names on the cup. To do this they will need to adjust to a different type of hockey as playoff hockey is a completely different beast than the regular season. Everything changes in the playoffs as the superstars are checked tighter and the ice shrinks for everyone. Defence and goaltending generally take the focus with games becoming tighter and tighter as the playoffs move on.

In October every NHL team had hopes of making the playoffs and as the months wore on that number seemed to lessen. Now the NHL season is over leaving 16 teams to continue their dreams in the playoffs while 14 teams go home with nothing. The playoffs did not come down to the last day but close to it with Thursday seeing the end of the hopes for many teams.

The NHL is going into their last week of the 2012 regular season and the playoff spots continue to be filled up. Along with this comes the teams that have begun to lose any possibility of making the playoffs. This next week will finalize these playoff spots as 16 teams will continue while 14 teams will miss their shot.
