The NCAA schedule is beginning to get a lot more interesting with teams being knocked out of contention and big games coming up. This week the biggest game was between two ranked teams but one with much more hope for the top prize in the NCAA. This game was between the #20 USC Trojans and the #6 Stanford Cardinal. The Cardinal were bringing their league leading winning streak that stretches back to last year. The Trojans were coming into the game off of a big win against their longtime rivals the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

This week was a big week in the NCAA as the first BCS rankings came out and started the speculation over the National Title. The Bowl Championship Series Rankings are the true rankings in the NCAA as all other rankings have a much smaller impact on the National Championship Game. The BCS rankings are created by a computer calculation that includes the AP Poll, Coaches Poll, Team Record, and Strength of Schedule to determine who the best team in the Nation is.

The NCAA was not too thrilling this weekend but there was one thing that many noticed above all. The top 10 teams in the NCAA are there for a reason and that is because they are the cream of the crop. There were a number of games this past weekend that saw these top teams completely dominate some good teams. The Top 25 is constantly under scrutiny because it is not an exact science. The problem is that the rankings are based on a number of different factors and before the BCS rankings come out the rankings are based on writers and coaches voting for their top teams.

The NCAA had been pure offence in the first two weeks with some defences that were supposed to be great this year suffered. Notre Dame was supposed to have one of the better defences but were torn through by Michigan’s Denard Robinson. TCU was also in one of the biggest surprises this year as they were again supposed to be one of the best defences in the nation. This was tested in their first game as they faced a young superstar in Robert Griffin III and the Baylor Bears. Week 3 reversed this trend as two of the best teams in the nation showed that defence is still one of the best ways to win a game.

NCAA Football has had a rough offseason after numerous problems arose and made it to the public eye. The biggest thing has been the never-ending flow of reports of recruiting infractions and illegal activities in the NCAA. One of the biggest issues has come out of Ohio State where players sold merchandise in exchange for tattoos. This infraction has led to legendary coach Jim Tressel retiring and Terrell Pryor leaving the team to enter the NFL supplemental draft. It may also lead to major sanctions against the program that could include anything from the removal of scholarships to a ban on attending bowls and forfeiting wins much like at USC. It could also lead to the worst sanction of all known as the death penalty, although that is unlikely as it has only been invoked once against SMU.
