The New York Rangers would stamp their ticket to the biggest series of the year when they beat the Montreal Canadiens 1-0 in Game 6. That would finish off a series that, when it was made, had the Rangers losing and not by a slim margin. Most believed that the Montreal Canadiens were just a better team and a team that seemed to get past their toughest challenges on the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. Then the Rangers would win both of the first game in Montreal and the tone was set for the rest of the series. The Rangers would put the Canadiens on the defence early having them go down 2-0 before they could even get out of their own building.

The second round of the NHL playoffs are here with the 16 team pool cut down to only 8 remaining teams. The first round would be a thriller as a number of series would go down to the wire after a number of great game 7s. The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens would be the two teams that would not make the competition close as Montreal would advance in 4 games while Boston would do it in 5.

The NHL would start an annual tradition in 2008 when they held the first ever Winter Classic in Buffalo. Ralph Wilson Stadium would play host to the first ever outdoor game in NHL history in a move to expose the NHL to a bigger crowd. It was a spectacle and it was a success so the NHL continued to hold these games. It has become a tradition that on New Year’s Day the NHL takes hold and puts on their biggest regular season game of the year.

The Newest name division might not have a name that rolls off of the tongue but it is pretty accurate. The Metropolitan Division is just that as it features some of the biggest markets in the NHL. It may not have the Maple Leafs or the Canadiens but the size of the cities that love hockey in this division are much bigger. It will feature two states that have some of the biggest followings in the game while also including some of the largest Eastern cities.

The new alignment for the NHL was big for teams like the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets as they were able to move to their respectful places in the Eastern Conference. It would be the main story for the majority of the preseason when realignment was brought up. These teams would finally get a move to a place where they belonged rather than staying in the west and having another bad travel schedule.

The NHL season is a little stranger than usual with such a compressed time frame to get everything done. This is being seen this year as the Stanley Cup Finals are still going on and every other team is in offseason mode. Along with talk about a great series between Chicago and Boston the news continues to flow in from the other teams are the league.

The NHL prides itself on the fact that in the last nine seasons they have not had one team win two Stanley Cups. It is a lesson in parity that leagues love as no one team is dominating the league giving every team and fans of every team hope that they could be the next one. This can also be a double edged sword as dominant teams can bring in a lot more interest from markets that might not be the biggest and best.
