The issues in the AUS certainly didn’t help to get a struggling conference back on their feet on the national stage as powerhouses are back in U sports and two of them will face off for the ultimate prize after the National Bowls.

The National Playoffs looked like they were all set until a situation broke out in the east coast causing a bit of a strange circumstance for one of the country’s smaller divisions and leaving things up in the air heading into the semi-final bowl games.

Conference Final weekend had the potential to produce a lot of familiar teams in the National Playoffs but at least one team took their opportunity to make an impact and move one step closer to the Vanier Cup.

I have said many times before that winning consistently in college football is the hardest thing to do because of how teams are made. In college football teams are only together for a limited time as they come in to the school and then graduate. In the CIS there are only a maximum of 5 years for every player to play on any team as after that they no longer have eligibility.

The AUS is a very unique league as the smallest part of the CIS with only four teams competing for the Jewett Trophy. With such a small conference the AUS is generally underestimated and brushed off when it comes to the national picture.

The AUS has been dominated by the Saint Mary’s Huskies for a very long time as they are always at the top of the conference. In the last four years the Huskies have finished first in the AUS and have taken home four Jewett Trophies in a row. This dominance is typical in the smallest conference in the CIS with only four teams in the league.

The Vanier cup will make an interesting trip this year as it will begin to tour along with the Grey Cup. The first stop in this new deal will be in Vancouver the day before the Grey Cup in the newly renovated B.C. Place. It will be the 47th time the trophy is handed out. Last year the game was played in Quebec City at PEPS Stadium on the campus of Laval University. It became a big advantage for one team as the Laval Rouge et Or faced off against the Calgary Dinos.
