The Pacific Division will certainly be a division with a lot of eyes on it as the California teams still fight it out and try to get back to the top while the Alberta teams look for a resurgence and the newest team tries to make an impression.

The NHL season is officially over with the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs and after an amazing postseason the finals would somewhat disappoint. Coming into the Finals it was widely considered that the two best teams had not necessarily made it. The New York Rangers were not the team that anyone expected to make it and that almost everyone expected to lose in the finals. They had amazing performances from Henrik Lundqvist and an emotional Martin St. Louis but to many, that was not going to be enough to get past anyone out of the west.

The NHL continues to grow and despite many teams in the south struggling to get by there is one area that is not following suit with other non-traditional markets. The west coast of the USA, or more accurately California, was never a hockey market when the Los Angeles Kings entered the NHL in 1967. It was one of the first major expansions in the NHL and they would look to the West Coast to add two teams.

Sometimes it is best to go with your first instinct as a blogger that does predictions and I have learned this with the NHL season. In my 2011-12 season preview I predicted a Los Angeles vs. Philadelphia Stanley Cup Finals. I changed my tune though when it came to the playoffs as I then looked to a Nashville vs. Pittsburgh Finals.

One of the most exciting times in the NHL calendar is now passed as the Trade Deadline has come and gone. On February 27th the NHL GMs had their last chance to make their team better or make room on their roster for next year. This year the action was not all it was built up to be as the majority of the deals were not involving big names.
