A lot of times in the UFC there are fighters who come into the promotion with plenty of hype and rise up to become contenders almost immediately. These fighters can win only a few fights and if they are impressive wins can get a title shot in almost no time. It has happened time and time again with fighters seemingly bolting up the rankings for a title shot. For some it is not fair as they need to prove themselves but many times they are the best fighters in the division. That causes them to get plenty of talk surrounding them which is how they earn their shots to begin with.

The welterweight division was a bit of a mystery heading into UFC 171 as there was not champion with the rule of Georges St. Pierre over. A lot would be figured out at the fight though when the last #1 contender for the title would look to make good on a second chance while taking on a legend who was hoping his return to the UFC would be topped off by winning a title.

Women have had their place in MMA fighting in Strikeforce and Invicta FC for a long time before the UFC would create a women’s division. The UFC decided to add the women’s for a large part because of one fighter, Ronda Rousey, but also because the UFC is constantly changing. The UFC has become a major sport and all because they brought something different to the sports world.

The UFC began their stretch of title fights on Saturday as the Lightweight title was up for grabs in yet another rematch for the division. The Light weight division in the UFC has stood above most as one of the most competitive divisions.

The Ultimate Fighter finished a long and beneficial relationship with Spike TV with the TUF 14 Finale. For 14 seasons ago Spike TV and the UFC got together to make The Ultimate Fighter, a reality show where fighters got the chance to fight themselves into a UFC contract. This relationship was one of the best for both institutions as the UFC became the fastest growing sports in the world and Spike became a successful network.

The Ultimate Fighter franchise is one of the biggest reasons for the growth of the UFC with the growth directly affected how popular it has become. From the very start the reality show the UFC saw something special as the first ever Ultimate Finale featured, what I consider to be the best fight in UFC history. This fight between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar was so good that it may have been the turning point in the UFC.
