The Pacific Division is one of the most interesting in the NHL ever since it was put together two years ago.

The old Pacific Division is much like the new Pacific division as the top teams from the West Coast remain the top teams in the Pacific. The California trio continue their dominance of the Pacific in a massive surge of California hockey. When the NHL decided to expand to the West Coast it was thought to be a terrible idea. The land of sunshine and beaches had no idea what hockey was and putting a pro team there was sure to fail.

The NHL week seemed to be business as usual for all teams until one player on one of the best surprises of the season would change the week. The Colorado Avalanche have had a great season so far as they are among the top teams in the league. The season was never supposed to go like this for the team as most expected them to falter with a number of young inexperienced players. Not to mention that a new coach with no NHL experience in Patrick Roy taking over for his first year.

The new alignment for the NHL was big for teams like the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets as they were able to move to their respectful places in the Eastern Conference. It would be the main story for the majority of the preseason when realignment was brought up. These teams would finally get a move to a place where they belonged rather than staying in the west and having another bad travel schedule.
