The Metropolitan Division is still a young one after the re-organization brought some of the biggest markets into one division.

The Metropolitan Division does not have the most popular name in the NHL as many did not like it when the NHL announced the new division last year. Yet there is no other name that could describe this division any better. It is exactly that, a Metropolitan division with some of the biggest cities in the NHL in the division. New York is represented with their two teams alongside New Jersey from across the Hudson. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia also have their cities represented in the division.

The youth movement in the NHL continues to grow every year as younger players are having a bigger impact in the league every year. Last year the 18-year old Nathan MacKinnon would light up the NHL and earn the Calder Trophy, becoming the youngest player to do so. This youth movement has made the draft one of the most important events of the NHL calendar.

The NHL week seemed to be business as usual for all teams until one player on one of the best surprises of the season would change the week. The Colorado Avalanche have had a great season so far as they are among the top teams in the league. The season was never supposed to go like this for the team as most expected them to falter with a number of young inexperienced players. Not to mention that a new coach with no NHL experience in Patrick Roy taking over for his first year.

With realignment in the NHL the teams began preparing for a new season with brand new opponents while the fans wondered what their divisions might be called. The realignment was not the only big story in the offseason as the names of these new divisions was also a popular topic of debate. The NHL would announce the official realignment and also the new names for these division. Most would be the usual names but one would be a complete change as the Metropolitan Division was born.

The NHL is ever changing and as the league continues to grow it continues to become that much more complex. It wasn’t so long ago when the key to winning a Stanley Cup was adding veteran players to a team that could bring the experience needed to win in the league.

The Southeast is a division of change as they hold some of the youngest franchises in the NHL but also some of the most exciting. The division is full of franchises that have made a small impact on the league but many are only recent additions to the league. Even if they have been the in the league for a while these teams are still making things exciting in the NHL.

The NHL Draft signifies the beginning of the NHL offseason as teams begin to rebuild and look to the future of the game. The new generation is coming up as players from the minor leagues look to get in to the NHL and make an impact. Of course the draft is not the only way to do this as free agency is right around the corner for teams to add players.
