The Sochi Olympics are just a few weeks away and as the world watches Sochi for the Olympics one event will stand out. The hockey tournament at the Olympics has been the premier event of every Winter Olympics and a large part has been the involvement of the NHL. The league will take two weeks off as their players travel to Sochi and play for their countries and although the fans and players love it the time off could be the last time ever for the NHL.

This week in the NHL was a big one for the league as they would hold what has become their biggest event on the regular season schedule. The NHL Winter Classic has become one of the biggest games on the regular season schedule for the NHL and this year it was bigger than ever. The NHL would go to the largest stadium in North America at the Big House in Ann Arbour, Michigan. With a capacity of over 100,000 the potential to break records was there and the NHL could not have chosen better teams to ensure that these records were broken.

The NHL continues to grow and despite many teams in the south struggling to get by there is one area that is not following suit with other non-traditional markets. The west coast of the USA, or more accurately California, was never a hockey market when the Los Angeles Kings entered the NHL in 1967. It was one of the first major expansions in the NHL and they would look to the West Coast to add two teams.

The Red Wings will enjoy their new division as they finally get the move they wanted to the Eastern Conference. Although they will be one of the big stories in the realignment it is not the only one for the new Atlantic Division. Joining the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, and Boston Bruins the Detroit Red Wings will be a part of a truly Original Six division.

So it starts as 2 months into the NHL the coaching carousel kicked into gear with multiple firings and hiring’s. This time was a little different though as the coaching carousel did not just begin with a firing one day and a new hiring. Instead the carousel featured two firings within two hours on the same day and a hiring so quick that it was almost unbelievable.
