Silva was coming off of a broken leg that forced him out for just over a year while Diaz had decided not to return to the UFC unless he was able to get a big name fight. Both were making their return to the octagon to plenty of fanfare and in essence the matchup was between two very different people.

Most of the excitement has been built due to the return of the most dominant champion in UFC history. The year began with what many would consider the most dominant group of champions ever assembled. A number of weight divisions would see their champions solidify their spot in 2012 and there did not seem to be much change coming.
