The last time Alexander Gustafsson stepped into the octagon he was fighting for the Light Heavyweight Championship at UFC 165 in Toronto. The fight was the built as the biggest in Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ career as he would take on the best fighter he has ever fought. Gustafsson was seen as the answer to the domination of Jones as he was the only fighter that was able to match what Jon Jones did best. Jones has always used his length to keep fighters on the outside and punish them on the feet.

The talk going in to UFC 165 surrounded the significance of the main even no matter who would win. If Alexander Gustafsson could get past Jones it would be the second time in the last few months where the #1 Pound for Pound fighter in the UFC lost his belt. It would also be the first time a European fighter held a belt in the UFC.

The UFC went to Seattle on Saturday in a fight card that could easily change the future of the UFC. It was not a fight that would change the path of the company like UFC 100 or UFC on Fox 1 would but for three weight classes it would determine the near future. For the Light Heavyweight and Welterweight divisions UFC on Fox 5 would show the future take on the past. In both fights a young up and coming star would take on the old guard in an attempt to show everyone that the new breed was ready to take over.

The UFC continues its deal with the Fox sports channels this weekend and like usual the free fight looks to be better than most pay per views. The UFC has been stuck in a pattern as of late as they have regularly put together great free fight cards and when it comes to the paid fights they tend to fall short.

There has been a lot going on in the UFC throughout the last month since the last time the UFC held a major fight. There has been the good like the new season of The Ultimate Fighter starting with live fights dominating Friday Nights in the UFC schedule as they look for the next fighter. Then there has been the bad as they saw #1 contender for the Heavyweight Title Allistair Overeem test positive for steroids.
