UFC 231 Preview

ufc-231For decades combat sports have been dominated by the biggest and baddest fighters on the planet as the heavier weight shave always taken the headlines.

When boxing was at its height it was the heavyweights that were the best fighters in the world and the only fighters who could cross over into pop culture.

When the UFC first began to gain steam it was the light heavyweights who were the stars like Chuck Lidell and Randy Couture.

It has always been the biggest fighters who have taken the most headlines in combat sports but as MMA has evolved the mould is being broken.

The UFC is leading the way in this change as they have some great heavyweight names especially with recent fighters starting to come up but the recent stars have come in far lighter weight classes.

The biggest star of them all has been Conor McGregor who came up through the featherweight division and then became the lightweight champion.

He brought a lot of attention to the smaller weight classes and they remain the focus to this day with a talent level far above the other divisions.

The UFC will display that talent at UFC 231 when they feature two weight classes, one with some of the best talent and one hoping to provide the same on the women’s side.

Women’s MMA continues to evolve every year with more stars emerging and better fights coming about on a regular basis.

When women’s MMA was added to the UFC the talent level wasn’t near the men’s side but things are beginning to rise.

As the talent builds the UFC continues to sort things out as they add more divisions to give more talent a chance to compete.

Their latest addition is Women’s Flyweight where women that have struggled to make strawweight but are too small for Bantamweight can find a home.

The original title holder was found through The Ultimate Fighter but after Nicco Montaño remained inactive after winning the title only to be pulled from her first scheduled title defence for weight cut issues she was stripped of the title.

It left the division without a champion and at UFC 231 the search for that champion will come between two of the best in women’s MMA.

Valentina Shevchenko was a big reason for the creation of the division and was given the first title fight against Montaño.

When that was cancelled she got an even tougher test in the former strawweight champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk.

Jędrzejczyk has not had the best run recently struggling to make weight and losing twice to Rose Namajunas for the strawweight title.

Now she moves up trying to become the first woman to win titles in two weight classes while Shevchenko looks to win the title that many assumed would be hers.mma-sidebar.fw

The strawweight division has been one of the more entertaining in recent years and this new class has a lot of potential including this fight between two of the best women fighters right now.

As the Women’s Flyweight title looks to get going the featherweight division is attempting to finally see the title fight that should highlight the best of the division.

Although widely considered one of the best fighters in the UFC, Max Holloway has been inactive for a long time.

After winning the title and defending it in 2017 against Jose Aldo he has failed to show up for a fight.

A leg injury kept him out of his fight against Frankie Edgar then an unsafe weight cut kept him out of a super fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov in the lightweight division.

He was set to fight Brian Ortega in July this year but an interview before the fight had the UFC concerned and he was ruled out due to concussion-like symptoms.

That fight will finally get underway as Holloway will finally defend his title to prove that he truly is the best featherweight in the world.

He has a very tough challenge in Ortega who is a world-class jiu-jitsu practitioner who has never lost an MMA fight in his career.

It took him a while to find his way here so he waited for Holloway to recover and looks to shock everyone with a win at UFC 231.

This fight has the potential to be one of the best of the year as both are at the top of their game and among the best on the roster.

It will be the perfect display of what the featherweight division has in store as one of the best divisions in the UFC.

The UFC hopes that the women’s flyweight division can follow suit and provide that level of talent for women’s MMA highlighted another smaller weight class.
