UFC on Fox 6 Preview

UFC_on_FOX_6The Flyweight division is one of the new divisions in the UFC and has only had one champion since it entered the UFC. The lightest weight division was made to showcase the smaller fighters in the division who were too small to fight in the Bantamweight division. The Flyweights would also represent a weight class that would bring plenty of excitement to make up for the lack of knockouts in the lighter weights. These fighters are small and many don’t pack as big of a punch but what they do bring is speed and quickness. The Flyweights are the fastest fighters in the UFC and the action does not stop in their fights. That doesn’t mean that KOs are unheard of either as fighters can catch each other for a big KO. The skills of these fighters were on full display in the Flyweight tournament that would pit the first four flyweights in the UFC against each other to determine the champion. Demetrious Johnson would come out on top in the tournament as he would be named the Flyweight Champion of the UFC and begin his reign as the newest champion in the promotion. Johnson would enter the UFC in 2011 as a Bantamweight fighter. He would impress in his first few fights and would get a shot at the title against Dominick Cruz. It was clear that Cruz was the bigger and stronger fighter as he would go on to beat Johnson to retain his title. When the new weight class would come into the promotion it was a natural fit for Johnson who was one of the smallest fighters in the Bantamweight division. He would enter the Flyweight tournament with the consensus #1 Flyweight in the world Ian McCall. His first fight would not determine much as McCall and Johnson would end the fight in a draw forcing a rematch. Johnson would win the rematch and go on to fight Joseph Benavidez in the championship fight and would win in a split decision. Now he will defend the title for the first time on Fox as he takes on John Dodson in what should be a very exciting fight. Dodson will be looking to end the reign of Johnson even before it has truly started and he has the ability to do it. Dodson is one of the more recent members of The Ultimate Fighter family after winning the show in 2011. As he entered the UFC they would announce the creation of the new division that would fight his style perfectly. He would immediately switch to the Flyweight division and begin to impress fans and the management with a unanimous decision win over Tim Elliott and a KO win over Jussier Formiga. His athleticism and quickness has entertained everyone enough to earn him the first shot at the title. The fight will not go to the ground as both fighters love to stand and trade with quick hands. It will not be a brawl as neither fighter will just stand there and trade as both like to move around and not stay anywhere for long. They are both very fast fighters but have different ways of trying to win a fight. Dodson is a very creative fighter who will have the athletic edge in this fight. He likes to create ways to win and has the ability to knock out his opponents. Meanwhile Johnson is a much more calculated fighter who likes to win rounds on his way to winning fights. He does not have the athleticism of Dodson, although he is still very athletic, and is much more controlled as he wins fights. The fight will definitely be fast and both fighters will take their shots and win round but in the end it will be Dodson’s athleticism that will win out as he will earn the Flyweight belt with a unanimous decision win.

Before the lightest division takes the centre of the octagon there will be two more fights that will have big implications in their divisions. First will be the lightweight division as Anthony Pettis takes on Donald Cerrone. Both fighters are considered two of the best lightweight fighters right now. With Benson Henderson set to fight Gilbert Melendez, Cerrone and Pettis will be fighting for the next shot. Pettis is the former WEC champion who came into the UFC as the expected #1 contender until the lightweight title was held up in multiple rematches and Pettis’ fight schedule would never match up. He has waited for his chance and now will need to fend off another major lightweight challenger to earn his spot. Cerrone was never a champion in the WEC but he would fight Henderson twice in the old promotion for the title. He has now gone 6-1 in his UFC career and is looking to add Pettis’ name to his win list for a chance at the lightweight title. After these lightweights face off there will be a swan song for a very polarizing fighter who will take on one of the most promising up and coming fighters in the light heavyweight division. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson has been cheered and booed in the UFC but he is still one of the most exciting fighters in the promotion. He has announced that this will be his last fight in the UFC as he looks for new opportunities to entertain more fans. As Rampage looks to end his fighting career in the UFC with a big KO, Glover Teixeira is looking to continue his rise up the Light Heavyweight ladder. After a Submission and a TKO Glover is undefeated in the UFC and the Chuck Liddell trained fighter looks to get his shot at the title with more wins. He will put his name even closer to the title if he can add Rampage on his list of wins. UFC on Fox 6 is a great card and will be another great free fight as a title is on the line along with the future of two more divisions in the balance.
